  • Ceebee: I disagree that this is one word. An arch enemy is not like an archbishop. It's not a formal designation. One man's arch enemy is another man's arch friend. Plus with two words, you get the suggestion that your enemy is arch in the sense of "wry", "knowing", "ironic", as well as "principal, main, chief".

  • Well, it's fine with me either way. I just looked it up and it was listed as one word. But that's why God made many dictionaries, not just one. I mean, it isn't as if I feel stabby about it being two words.

    Edit P.S.: why does it being a single word imply that it's an official designation? That struck me as odd.
